Donor Testing Laboratory

Over the years the screening and testing of blood donors has improved dramatically.
Community Blood Services’ Donor Testing Laboratory is a fully automated state-of-the-art technology laboratory operated by highly qualified, proficient and dedicated staff. All tests performed meets the requirements, regulations and guidelines of state, federal and other applicable regulatory agencies.

Our testing lab enables us to provide a safe blood supply and high-quality blood products for transfusion. The following tests are routinely done on each donor at the time of donation. We also provide cost-effective blood donor testing for our hospital clients.

  • ABO/Rh – Determines a donor’s blood type
  • Antibody Screen – Detects unexpected antibodies to common red cell antigens
  • Automated Qualitative screening test for syphilis
  • Antibody to Human Immunodeficiency Virus Types 1 and 2 (Anti HIV 1 / 2) Plus O
  • Antibody to Human T Cell Lymphotropic Virus Types 1 and II ( Anti HTLV I/ II)
  • Antibody to Hepatitis B Virus, Surface Antigen ( Anti HBsAg)
  • Antibody to Hepatitis B Core Antigen (Anti HBc)
  • Antibody to Hepatitis C Virus (Anti HCV)
  • Nucleic Acid Test (NAT) for HIV, HCV and West Nile Virus (WNV)
  • T. Cruzi (Trypanosoma Cruzi) Test for Chagas Disease

Available by request:

  • CMV Screen – Test for anti-cytomegalovirus antibody
  • Sickle cell screen

Community Blood Services’ testing laboratory also collaborates with The New Jersey Sharing Network, a non-profit state-approved organ procurement organization responsible for the recovery of organs and tissue for New Jersey residents currently awaiting transplantation, to manage all of its infectious diseases testing for those tissues and organs donated for transplant.
